- Harbin is the largest city in the Heilongijiang province in North Eastern China - not far from the Russian border. Because of its history with and close proximity to Russia, the city has a considerable European feel to it seen in its architecture (take a stroll around the Old Quarter) but also in its cuisine which features many Russian style dishes, flavours and bread! Harbin is known for its very cold winters and is famous for its winter sports (skiing, ice skating, winter safaris) and its world -famous Ice and Snow Festival. Despite the cold winters, Harbin enjoys very warm summers and there are also plenty of summer activities. Locals like to enjoy the warm summer evenings sitting outside in the tree lined streets playing poker and enjoying the local Harbin beer. There is also quite a lively nightlife with many bars, cafes and clubs, sporting venues for bowling, swimming, golf etc. and many places to eat - both Chinese and Western. The city is known as a tourist hotspot with many domestic and international visitors. There is an airport 45 minutes from the city centre serving both domestic and some international destinations.
